Cornstarch experiment

Cornstarch Experiment: Suspension Phase

In this experiment our students mixed cornstarch with water and observed the unique properties of the resulting mixture. They saw that the mix was fluid and acted like a liquid when it was left alone or poured slowly, but displayed properties of solids when force was applied to it. They learned that this was because cornstarch and water combine to form a suspension, which is a state that changes viscocity with differing levels of force, instead of different temperatures. It´s a non-Newtonian liquid.
